Tension and stress are often confused. Tension can be experienced as excitement - without stress. Very low tension - intense boredom/ apathy - causes mental stress.
Working harder mentally or physically we experience tension. As we approach tolerable limits we are more likely to experience stress. This may not register until it reaches a damaging level.
Un-discharged tension accumulates as residual stress. This generates a range of symptoms & eventual ill-health or breakdown.
There are many symptoms of stress. Pain of various sorts may arise. Teeth clenching or bruxism may cause jaw pain. Neck pain or shoulder blade pain often arise through prolonged neck tension. Coupled with sedentary inactivity, held tension often produces sciatic leg pain and back pain.
Stress Headache is common, maybe with feeling light headed and dizziness - whilst feelings of anxiety are often accompanied by dry throat or dry mouth or sweating and palpitations. These feelings may also combine in panic attacks.
Pain in the stomach is common with other stomach problems like stomach cramps, stomach pain after eating, diarrhoea and irritable bowel (IBS). There may also be generalised muscle soreness and muscle aches.
People who are always on the go, can become clumsy, forgetful and light headed - and hence accident prone. Sexual problems are also commonly caused by very high stress.
Stress patterns are very individual. These usually arise from conflict between the way we wish a situation to be and our capacity to achieve it. This also results from sheer overwork, internal conflicts or social, emotional or relationship problems.
Stress accompanied by constant anxiety & worry leads to a loss of perspective and, low mood. People often resort to smoking, alcohol abuse and may develop porn, drug or other addictions to distract from life pressures.
The first therapeutic resort is to relieve the more pressing symptoms. Stress Counselling and Hypnotherapy for Stress - in addition to simple relaxation techniques - provide such stress relief and ease immediate difficulties.
Successful longer term management of stress lies in addressing underlying issues. Where damaging behaviour patterns are long established or causes lie in early personal history, Behavioural Therapy approaches and Psychotherapy are needed.
These intensive methods reset mental states and adjust baseline behaviour to comfortably sustainable levels.
